Best Recipes: Raw Vegetable Smoothie

Posted by moderator in Recipes (Sunday May 21, 2006 at 10:03 pm)

If you enjoy the taste of raw vegetables, then you’ll love this Raw Vegetable Smoothie. The health benefits of raw vegetables are well known and many people enjoy drinking their raw vegetables just as much as eating them.

This Raw Vegetable Smoothie has a wonderful twang to it because of the picante salsa. It’s very flavorful and you will want to make this a regular staple of your raw foods diet.

Raw Vegetable Smoothie

* 1 - 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice OR balsamic vinegar
* 4 tablespoons picante salsa
* 1 cup raw broccoli
* 1 raw tomato, quartered
* 1/2 raw carrot, cut into 1-inch pieces
* 1 cup raw kale, or any leafy green
* 1 - 2 cloves raw garlic
* 1/2 cup raw hulled sunflower seeds
* 1/2 cup raw un-hulled sesame seeds
* 1 - 2 slices onion

Directions

Start by pouring liquid ingredients (lemon juice, salsa) into blender. Add remaining ingredients and blend until texture is that of a creamy milkshake.

Coupons: Getting Acquainted with Your New Best Friend

Posted by moderator in Cooking Info (Wednesday May 17, 2006 at 6:44 pm)

Wouldn’t it be nice to go grocery shopping and save lots of money? I hear success stories all the time about shoppers saving thousands of dollars on their grocery bill each year, leaving me to wonder, why can’t it be me? With a little research, I stumbled upon the answers.

The most obvious success in using coupons is to actually get a hold of them from Sunday papers or product websites. Virtual Coupon Organizer, a website which allows you to view a list (including value) of coupons in the Sunday paper in the largest city closest to you. This website is a wonderful resource to help you search for coupons on selected items you purchase frequently. Browse through the grocery circulars and pick out any coupons on already sale priced items. If there are high-valued coupons on items you use, buy several copies of the Sunday paper. Be sure to check the coupon’s expiration date; use those with the earliest expiring date on your next trip to the grocery store.

It’s a great idea to buy a coupon organizer. Galison.com carries fashionable, yet affordable, purse-size organizers to house all of your valuable coupons. You can organize your coupons by food groups, alphabetical order, expiration dates, or whatever system works for you to make finding coupons quick and easy. (Nobody likes to get behind someone at the grocery store and wait while a thrifty shopper digs through masses of clippings.)

Also, be sure you familiarize yourself with grocery store coupon policies. Typically, most grocery stores have a double coupon day; the perfect day of the week to go shopping for food. Some grocery chains offer a frequent shopper program or distribute V.I.P. cards to save on selected items or a percentage off the total amount. Take full advantage of whatever program your grocery uses to attract customers.

There are a couple of final things to remember when capitalizing on your coupons. Even though you may have coupons for toiletries, a grocery store may not be the most economical place to redeem savings; grocery stores often charge more for these items than your local drugstore. When shopping for items, look on top of the shelves, as well as bottom of shelves for lower prices. Marketers have an uncanny knack of positing the higher priced items at eye level on the shelves.

So, the next time you go grocery shopping, don’t forget the coupons!

Quick and Easy No-Bake Butterfinger Cake

Posted by moderator in Recipes, Desserts (Monday May 15, 2006 at 7:03 pm)

One of my favorite no-bake cake recipes is the rich, delicious, Butterfinger Cake.

If you’re looking for a quick and easy, yet delectable, dessert to prepare for any occasion, a Butterfinger Cake always proves to be a real crowd-pleaser.

The ingredients needed for this scrumptious dessert include:
• 1 Angel Food Cake
• 4 Egg Whites
• 2 cups Powdered Sugar
• 1 Stick of Butter
• 1 (16 oz.) of Cool Whip
• 6 Butterfinger Candy Bars

To begin, separate 4 egg whites and beat them until they become fluffy; add the stick of melted butter, powered sugar, and cool whip into a bowl; stir until well-blended. Use a 9 x 13” pan to pinch up half of the Angel Food cake into small pieces, filling the bottom of the pan. Next, pour half of the Cool Whip mix over the cake pieces. Then take 3 of the Butterfinger candy bars and smash them into small bits (pounding them while still in the wrapper with a coffee cup works well for me). Sprinkle the pieces over the top of the cake and Cool Whip mix already prepared in your pan. Repeat the steps, using the remaining Angel Food cake, Cool Whip mix and candy bars to make layers.

I also like this recipe because you can personally tailor the recipe by substituting some of the main ingredients. If Butterfingers aren’t your favorite candy bar, or if you are watching your calories, don’t dismiss the recipe yet. You can substitute and add any brand of candy bar (although the easier to smash into smaller pieces, the better). You may also look for packages of candy bars that come pre-prepared in “bite” sizes.

If you are preparing a Butterfinger cake for yourself or friends, and want to cut out some of the calories, there are a couple of substitutes that you can use. Try using health or nutrient bars in lieu of candy bars. Also, use low calorie Cool Whip to trim down on some of the calories.

Regardless of the ingredients you decide to add or substitute, Butterfinger cake is simple and easy to prepare, even for us novices.
